A Slow 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary: Ancient Cities, Tea and the South Coast

Itineraries · · 3 min read

A realistic one-week Sri Lanka route from the airport through Sigiriya, Kandy, tea country and Ella to the south coast, with honest drive times.

Seven days is enough to see a lot of Sri Lanka, and short enough that you can easily overdo it. Distances look small on a map, but mountain roads are slow. As a rule, plan for an average of roughly 40 to 50 km an hour outside the expressways.

This is the loop we suggest most often for a first visit: ancient cities, then hills, then sea. It ends on the south coast, so you finish by resting rather than rushing.

Day 1: Arrive and settle near the airport

Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, right beside Negombo. Unless you land early in the morning, stay the first night nearby and start properly the next day. We wrote a full guide to Negombo for exactly this. If you'd like a driver waiting when you land, see our airport transfers.

Days 2 and 3: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa

Drive north-east to the Cultural Triangle, about three to four hours depending on traffic. Spend the first afternoon at your hotel or on a village visit, and save the big climb for the morning.

Sigiriya Rock is best climbed at first light, before the heat and the crowds. Read our notes on visiting Sigiriya. On day three, take in the cave temples at Dambulla and the ruined city of Polonnaruwa, ideally by bicycle, when the light is soft and the sites are quiet.

Day 4: Kandy

A shorter drive south to Kandy, the hill capital. Visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening for the puja ceremony, walk the lake, and eat well. If you have time, stop at a spice garden or a cookery table on the road through Matale.

Day 5: Into tea country

Head up towards Nuwara Eliya, passing tea estates the whole way. A private visit to a tea maker is the best hour of the day: you can taste tea within minutes of it being rolled. Alternatively, take the famous train from Kandy, see our Kandy to Ella train guide.

Day 6: Ella

Ella is a small town with a big view. Walk to Little Adam's Peak in the morning, and see the Nine Arches Bridge when the trains pass. Keep the afternoon free. Ella is at its best when nothing is scheduled.

Day 7: Down to the coast

Descend to the south coast, passing waterfalls and the edge of Udawalawe on the way. Finish at Galle Fort or a beach near Mirissa, and give yourself an unhurried sunset.

If your flight home is from Colombo or Katunayake, the southern expressway makes the return manageable, but leave generous time on your last day.

What this itinerary skips (on purpose)

The north (Jaffna), the east coast, Yala and the far south-east need more days. If you have ten or fourteen, we'd add wildlife and an extra beach stop. Our 10-day route does this, and the 14-day circuit covers the island.

Tailoring it

This route is a starting point, not a script. Travelling with kids, hiking more, or hoping to spend longer on the beach all change the pacing. Our Cinnamon Route is a 7-day version built around Galle, Kandy and the coast. Or tell us what you'd like and we'll shape a route around it.
